When Sgt. Jason Saile, Genesee County Sheriff's Office, pulled up in his patrol vehicle behind Ralph F. Forte as he walked on the east shoulder on Route 77 in the Town of Alabama on Aug. 12,2016, Forte stopped. As Saile got out of his vehicle, Forte raised his hands and turned around. As Saile approached, he held out his own hand. His right hand. It held a bottle of water. The apprehension of Forte came at the end of a 3 1/2-hour search in a wooded area off Route 77 on a hot and humid day after Forte had fled from a rollover motor vehicle accident on Route 77 at Bloomingdale Road. Forte wasn't a suspect in the accident, because he wasn't the driver. The driver initially fled, but was taken into custody quickly and charged with DWI. Saile led the search for Forte, which included three deputies, members of the Alabama Volunteer Fire Departent and two police helicopters, as much out of concern for his safety -- he was known to have suffered injuries in the accident -- as curious why he feld. The search was about to be called off when the sister of a volunteer firefighter reported seeing a man matching the suspect's description. Forte suffered cuts on his face and a dislocated arm in the accident. He was suffering from heat exhaustion by the time he was found. He was allowed to sit and rest in the shade of Saile's patrol vehicle while awaiting the arrival of medics. He was on probation in Monroe County.
